Eto'o To Become World's Highest Paid Footballer

A deal of £21.8million has been agreed between Internazionale and Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala for the transfer of Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o to the club owned by billionaire Suleyman Kerimov.

The contract that Eto'o is reported to have agreed will make him the worlds highest paid player, earning £17.9million a year after tax. The transfer will conclude weeks of reported negotiations between the two clubs, German Tkachenko, Anzhi's marketing consultant, leading a team to Milan to finalise the details of the move.

A statement on the official Anzhi website read:

"Today FC Anji (Makhachkala) and FC Inter Milan have agreed on transfer of Italian club`s forward Samuel Eto`o to our club.

"Both parties are fully satisfied with the transfer fee. Football club Anji is thankful to FC Inter officials for taking competent and constructive position in the negotiations.

"The player is to pass medical checkup tomorrow after which he will sign three-year contract with Anji. On Thursday Samuel will join his new team preparing for the match vs. FC Rostov."

The former Barcelona striker, three times a Champions League winner, had scored 37 goals for Inter last term, helping the Nerazzurri to retain the Coppa Italia. The thirty year old has netted a total of 250 goals during a thirteen year club career at a rate of better than one every two games.

Eto'o is not the first big name signing to have joined Anzhi in recent months, Hungarian star Balasz Dzsudzsak putting pen to paper on a four year contract in June while Brazilian World Cup winner Roberto Carlos signed a two-and-a-half-year deal back in February, winger Yuri Zhirkov also transferring back to his home country from Chelsea.

Anzhi, from the Republic of Dagestan region of Russia, currently sit fourth in the Russian Premier League table, nine points off leaders CSKA Moscow with a further nine games to go in a season that runs from March to October.

The End Of The Lines

Barring one 45 minute stint there has been one notable absentee from Bristol Rovers pre-season campaign, Chris Lines. Speculation among fans and the press has been ongoing for weeks but now it seems that these rumours have come to fruition as Rovers homegrown midfielder looks set to leave for pastures new.

The club connected with Lines all summer has been Championship Crystal Palace who have ex-Rovers director of football Lennie Lawrence as assistant manager under Dougie Freedman. It now turns out that Lines has spent the week training with the Eagles on their pre-season camp in Exeter and their Scottish boss likes the look of what he has seen, telling This Is Croydon Today"He hasn't done too badly at all, he's a runner from midfield, a bit like [former Palace midfielder] Neil Danns, and I'm pleased with him so far."

So it seems like the Bristolian may be heading off to London but the big question is 'will he be missed?', on the face of it selling a player who signed a three and a half year contract back in January 2010 to a second tier club would give the impression that, yes, he would be, but it's not quite as simple as that.

When Lines penned that deal a season and a half ago he was on top of the world having had a successful start to the season and he finished it off in much the same vein, last term, however, didn't go quite so well. Although that could be said for much of the squad in what ended up being a relegation season Lines' form tailed off fairly dramatically as he struggled with the role that numerous managers left him fulfilling.

Paul Trollope started playing Lines in a much more reserved guise in central midfield, something that doesn't appear to come naturally to a player who has far more attacking instincts than he has defensive, tackling is not his game and neither does he have any substantial aerial ability, that despite a hefty 6'2" frame. The introduction of Dave Penney did little to turn around fortunes as much of the play began to bypass the midfield who pushed little further up the pitch than they did under Trollope and subsequently Stuart Campbell at the end of the year.

While Paul Buckle has looked to instill an attacking mentality in his charges, possibly suiting Lines better, it begins to look like the 25 year old will not be missed, other options arising under the new manager's stewardship during the pre-season.

Buckle's tactics seem to be based around a 4-2-3-1 formation, the two holding midfield roles not being the places Lines would be at his best, as has already been mentioned, leaving his most productive position being the line of three sat just ahead but there is already a great deal of competition for those spots.

During the half that Lines has played so far this pre-season he looked every bit as anonymous as he did last term, failing to put his stamp on the game against a team who play at the eighth level of English football and since then Rovers have gone on to score ten goals, a number of players taking part in the three attacking midfield places.

Jo Anyinsah has a lot of experience playing in both the wide roles and as a striker, scoring two goals in the two games he has played in, looking threatening throughout, while Chris Zebroski is in much a similar position with the added bonus of being a favourite of Paul Buckle's at Torquay. The former Gulls boss has also shown a lot of faith in Ben Swallow to play across this line with Mustapha Carayol, Charlie Reece and Eliot Richards also having the ability to take up such a task, and that all goes without mentioning Wayne Brown who has by far shown the most promise of all the players to this point and began to overshadow Lines at the back end of the previous season.

It is one of the failings of modern day football, where clubs and their staff have to be looked at in a more business-like manner, but perhaps this is one situation where it makes sense to offload Lines. Palace are thought to be willing to offer a six-figure sum for the midfielder who is likely to be one of the better paid players currently at the club having signed a long term deal while Rovers were still settled in League 1. With chairman Nick Higgs having come out and said that the Gas are no longer big payers it may be that the funds from the sale of Lines would allow Buckle to bring in two or more players to add further depth to his squad.

This isn't all to say that Lines is a bad player, he is a powerful runner who is able to move at pace, has good vision and is one of the cleanest strikers of a football currently in the Rovers squad, making him a specialist from dead ball situations. When given the opportunity to push forward Lines is also a natural goalscorer having put sixteen in the onion bag over the previous two seasons.

He has shown before that he has the talent in League 1, attracting the interest of Southampton in the past, but last season certainly wasn't a vintage year and, perhaps having gone stale with the Pirates, it is time for a new beginning for the Filton College graduate if he is to make the most out of his career.

Double Capture For The Gas

Bristol Rovers secured the signatures of two more players on Friday as part of Paul Buckle's promotion revolution.

The first man to put pen to paper was former Queens Park Rangers full back Lee Brown, the six foot defender setting himself up for two years at the Memorial Stadium. The second announcement came close to five o'clock, pacy winger Mustapha Carayol the name to sign, once again for two seasons, that despite reported interest from newly promoted Stevenage.

Full back Brown started his youth career with QPR and held a permanent contract with the club until his release this summer. He had previously spent loan spells out at Conference Premier club Salisbury City before another year in non-leagues top flight with Hayes & Yeading even though Leyton Orient had made an offer for his services on transfer deadline day in January. Brown made just a single Football League appearance for QPR, back in 2010 when he came on as a substitute against Barnsley.

The youngster spoke at great length with his new manager Paul Buckle yesterday and is comfortable with the coming seasons aims.

"I had a couple of clubs call me over the last couple of weeks, but had a long conversation with Paul Buckle who persuaded me to come here, play some games and push on with my career.

"Rovers is a massive club and I have had friends here over the years, so as soon as the manager came knocking I was sure to take it.

"Promotion has to be the aim, you can feel it as soon as you come in, everyone has the same aim."

Carayol's move from Lincoln is subject to a small fee that will remain undisclosed. Born in Gambia the 21 year old started out as a youth team player at Swindon Town before joining up with Paul Ince, firstly at Macclesfield Town before the pair were on the move again, this time to MK Dons where he was handed his first team debut in a League Cup tie against Sheffield United. He also spent time out on loan to Crawley but his next move would be to Torquay where Paul Buckle became his new manager where, during two seasons with the Gulls, he notched up 54 first team appearances, scoring six goals in the process.

A move to Lincoln followed after Carayol turned down a new contract from Torquay, a £35,000 fee eventually set between both clubs. Even though he scored three goals in 33 League games for Lincoln last term he was unable to save the Imps from relegation and ended up on the transfer list before teaming up once again with Paul Buckle, the manager later sharing his pleasure at his latest signing.

"I am really delighted to be working with Mustapha again. I rather reluctantly sold him to Lincoln when I was at Torquay, but it will be fantastic to link up with him again.

"He has a lot of pace and trickery and is a very exciting player. He is still young, and I am sure the Rovers fans will love watching him."

Both signings will be confirmed upon the successful completion of a medical. The pair become the sixth and seventh signings of Buckle's reign following Matt Gill, Scott Bevan, Craig Stanley, Adam Virgo and Matt Harrold into the Memorial Stadium.

Wright To Join Shrews On A Permanent Deal

Bristol Rovers have agreed a deal for winger Mark Wright to Shrewsbury Town on a permanent basis following a highly successful loan spell during the first half of the season.

Wright is the Shrews top scorer this season with ten goals, including a hat-trick against local rivals Hereford, in 24 appearances. The loan followed a season long spell at Bristol Rovers that saw him play 25 games for the Gas, during which he scored no goals and failed to make a lasting impression at the Memorial Stadium.

Wright initially joined Rovers on transfer deadline day in summer 2009, only two and a half months after signing for Brighton, for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £30,000, after failing to settle in Sussex. The fee for joining Shrewsbury has once again not been revealed but could be around £50,000 with the contract lasting for two and a half years, taking it up to June 2013.

Starting his career at Walsall Wright enjoyed success at his first club, being part of the squad that won League 2 in 2007. A transfer to MK Dons followed and in 2008 Wright once again took the League 2 title, as well as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, scoring 13 goals in the process.

A happy Mark Wright tweeted:

@markwright82 "Finally very happy that everything has been sorted and I have signed 4 @shrewsburytown"

Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner was pleased to finalise a deal for Wright after a bit of wrangling with Rovers, he told shrewsburytown.com:

"It wasn't easy to agree a deal with Bristol Rovers but we finally got there, there were a few minor details with Mark but they were ironed out.

"When we took Mark on loan at the start of the season Bristol Rovers were happy to get him off their wage bill so we were expecting it to be a free transfer, but obviously with his record with us in half a season then he's got a value and we've probably made money for Bristol Rovers by Mark doing well for us."

If the deal goes through in time Wright will go straight into the Shrewsbury squad for Saturday's game against Morecambe.
